Strikers
|
We bemoan our lack of striker - quite rightly - but what has happened to strikers in the PL
Thinking about a traditional No 9, out and out striker only…
Man City don’t play with one Liverpool often don’t play with one
It’s Feb and no Striker has scored double figures. The top end few have mostly struggled :
Ronaldo has 9 Kane has 7 Lukaku has 5
Then previously good strikers are also doing nothing:
Jiminez has 5 Watkins has 5 Firminio has 4 Calvert-Lewin has 3 (although only played 9)
The likes of Werner, Ings, Cavani, Jesus and Watkins have barely a goal between them
Antonio is still only one off from being the top scoring No9. His competition includes Emmanuel Dennis and Neil Maupay…
Appreciating positions are more fluid and Salah, Jota, Mane, Sterling play as forwards and have been in the goals, the demise of the No9 seems pretty definitive this season at least

Where do I start? I don’t know much about strikers, but I can tell you a lot about Antonio.

Most teams play with a number 9, and in certain circumstances part of his job is playing into him to try and get up the pitch.
Man City are so good in possession they rarely need to relieve pressure, they do it by keeping the ball.
Also, usually your number 9 is up against two centre backs while everyone else is 1v1. So much of the kids coaching now is about winning that 1v1.

He’s an attacker, but he’s not a traditional number 9
Unlike Antonio, who just isn’t a footballer. Finally others are seeing it too

Interesting point.
Don't watch enough non-West Ham football to decide whether it's a fluke, or a fundamental shift in tactics, but I hope this sparks a debate among the more sensible posters.
*waits for it to fall off the front page or become a slanging match between idiots*
